At least 22 people were killed and 39 others were injured in a stampede at Mumbai’s Elphinstone railway station on Friday. The stampede took place on foot overbridge linking Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban railway stations. BMC’s disaster management unit said “required agencies have been mobilised.” Mumbai Police said there is a shortage of A -ve, B -ve and AB -ve blood group in KEM hospital.

Elphinstone station is usually crowded during peak hours as it caters to office-goers in the Lower Parel area. The station, on the Western Line of the Mumbai suburban rail network, also connects to Parel station on the Central line.

4.55 pm: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences over the deaths caused by a stampede in Mumbai.”Saddened at the loss of lives in Mumbai. Prayers forthe injured to recover. Condolences to the families who lostloved ones,” Banerjee said in a tweet.

4.20 pm: Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi has reacted to the incident. “Deeply pained to know about the tragic stampede at Elphinstone station. My thoughts with the families of the victims,” Gandhi wrote on Twitter.
4.15 pm: Former Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, in a letter dated 20 February, 2016, had written to Maharashtra MP Arvind Ganpat Sawant, saying the construction of 12m wide new foot over bridge at Elphinstone Road was under the “positive consideration” of Railway Ministry.

3.22 pm: In the aftermath of the incident, Railways Minister Piyush Goyal has ordered a high-level inquiry into stampede in Mumbai. Goyal also announced Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia to kin of the deceased, Rs 1 lakh to grievously injured and Rs 50,000 to those who suffered minor injuries.

3.08 pm: Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje has also expressed grief over the incident. “Deeply saddened by the Elphinstone Station incident. My prayers are with the families of the deceased. Hope the injured recover soon,” Raje wrote on Twitter.
3.00 pm: MoS Railways Sinha said no one should do politics on such an unfortunate incident and slammed the Opposition for doing politics on the issue. “There are people who always seek opportunity. We are above politics on the issue,” Sinha said.
2.55 pm: Reflecting on the incident, MoS Railways Manoj Sinha insisted that the tragic incident happened due to stampede and that no question has been raised on the structural strength of the bridge, ANI reported.
2.15 pm: A Class 4 student was among those killed. Rohit Parab was going to the Parel market with his elder brother Aakash to shop for Dussehra when the Elphinstone stampede took place. While Aakash suffered injuries in the accident, Rohit could not be saved.
2.10 pm:  Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu condoled the Elphinstone stampede. “My deepest condolences to the bereaved families who have lost their dear ones and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” he wrote on Twitter.
2.05 pm: Meanwhile in Bengaluru, two people were killed in another stampede by hundreds of people jostling to obtain coupons for free food offered by a local philanthropist, police said. The philanthropist has been detained for questioning.
2.00 pm: Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and Maharashtra Minister Vinod Tawde reach KEM Hospital. “Compensation of Rs 5 lakh each will be given to kin of those dead. State government will bear medical expenses of injured,” Tawde said.
1.55 pm: Congress President Sonia Gandhi said the Elphinstone stampede was “a man-made disaster”. Expressing her concerns over rail safety, Sonia Gandhi said “such accidents could have been avoided had there been proper planning and concern for safety.” She has also asked the Regional and Pradesh Congress Committee and Congress workers to contribute in providing assistance to the families of the bereaved.

1.45 pm: Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala hits out at the government after the Elphinstone stampede. “Terrible tragedy at Elphinstone. My condolences to the family of the deceased. Government talking of Bullet Trains but basic facilities missing,” he said in a tweet.
1.30 pm: Railways has cancelled the launch of 100 new Suburban Rail Services in Mumbai area. Piyush Goyal was slated to inaugurate the facilities today.
1.28 pm: CM Fadnavis also announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the next of the kins of deceased. “All the medical expenses of the injured will be borne by Government of Maharashtra. Enquiry will be conducted by Government of Maharashtra and Ministry of Railways and necessary, strict action will be taken,” he said.
